Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon. You did! And then you sent me to my room and brought Miss Sniveling Thing down here to proxy me? Fuck you! It hurt her shoulders a little.
She pretty much thinks because they are smashing he'll kindly stop the eaters. HOWEVER, h o w e v e r , what annoyed me even more was the fact that at a certain point it didn't even seem like she gave a shit about humanity. She was beyond selfish, didn't ever think through any of her actions, forced Azreal to listen to her side but refused to ever truly listen to his, and she decides to kill herself to.
That was the hingepin of your whole poisonous plot, to hurt me and to make me remember that hurt the rest of my eternal life! Whether I have you back or not, no matter how sweetly you take me in or how soft your lips, I will never be free of that moment, and that is just how you planned it, so damn you and damn your hollow sorries!
When I have not summoned my companions, they are to remain in their chambers! Remove her at once and be thankful I do not pin you in my garden as a reminder you are my guards and not my whoremongers! She's not the worst heroine in the world, but she's definitely not the best. I kinda wish Serafina had been the heroine instead.
Now that woman had an interesting ass story. Sometimes they're used to propel the plot forward, sometimes they happen to teach other characters a lesson, and sometimes they just fit the tone of the story.
However, when they do occur I like them to either A. So, imagine my shock when it's revealed that my favorite character in the whole book, Wickham, the most badass architecture nerd and all around fabulous tutor, was killed OFF - SCREEN , and barely mourned by Lan. This pissed me the hell off if I'm being perfectly honest. I had grown extremely invested in him as a character, and I felt like he was a great example of the ways in which the raised dead still held onto shreds of their humanity.
Frankly, he deserved better. I'm glad I read it and have no regrets about dedicating my time to finishing it. Personally, I think a lot of the issues were caused by the length of the book. I'm going to be honest, this did not need to be six to seven hundred pages, it just didn't. Due to the length a lot of repetition began to appear and that really exacerbated many of Lans more annoying qualities. SMITH truly has a way with words and can craft one hell of a story.
If you've never read an R. From what I've gathered it seems to be her most universally loved story and seems like a better place to start.
Be prepared for some repetitiveness, especially around the middle half of the book. My life. My lover. With me, now. With me. View all 16 comments. This one wasn't different in that field. Simple words and beautiful sentences. Hard world and strong characters. On the beginning I had feel that this one is going to be just like ''The Queen of All That Dies'', but only connection that this two book have are that both H had a big part for the shity world in book.
And both books are great!!! Lan is one girl from village in country that used to be United Kingdom. Now that is island where Azrael have his palace. They place of dead. The place of Eathers. And Lan is so, so sick about it. So she decide that she will go to Azrael town, find him and ask him nicely to stop Eathers.
Don't think that she is stupid. She is very well aware that she is probably going to die, but how do you know what will happen if you don't try. While reading this I laughed.
I cried. I was confused. And I loved every last second of that. The end.. God, the end I don't remember last time that I cried so much, but here I did. No need to worry- it is happy end. If you need one more reason why you should read this one- it is one of my favourite five books ever. View all 9 comments. Lee Smith as well as my immortal soul in the bargain with no regrets and a full truck of aplomb. Reading commencing. So far, I'm tempted to pout into the bargain a few generations of my future descendants too, the book is that good.

SO, after failing to sleep for 48 hours for obvious reasons and reading this superb piece of epicness three times at least because anything less than the minimum magical number would be a gruesome insult to this genius, i can honestly say that: Post apocalypse setting, beautifully done?
Beautiful and gruesome zombies? Main characters that made you wish for said zombie apocalypse? What i love about R. Lee Smith is that her characters actually seem real. They have the same reaction any individual might have. The personality, the characteristics, you name it. They're not just a type that you can find in every book with all that expected predictability. They make mistake. They admit to making those mistakes and actually seem realistic.
I was mad with Lan in this book. Awfully so. She understood Azrael only at the end and while i do understand her reasons during the book for requesting the same thing and trying to bargain for it, she never actually stopped to think about everything from his perspective. In her defense she did that at the end, but by that time everything had already been set in motion. I'm more than sure Azrael had his faults too he kinda did, but didn't but i was siding with him most of the time.
Not because i have a soft spot for the aloof, wounded male characters, but because he was hot in his own way Yes, he was even with the scars and the um debatable rate of regeneration. Stiillll I can't complain much.
Mainly because there is no book written by R Lee Smith that i haven't worshiped from the ground up. Hard finding a truly good read these days without stumbling through cliches and moderately tolerable books. Thus, my lowly conclusion because i wept like a newborn at the ending and at how much Azrael suffered is the following Nov 07, Federica the heir of fire rated it really liked it. Lee Smith is a genius and this book proves it.
There aren't many book that make me feel so many emotions that i'm completely knackered in the end but this one managed it just fine. I felt sadness, happiness and every emotion in between,i was a little reluctant to read this book because zombies are not my thing but i'm very happy that i did.
This story is like Beauty and the Beast meeting the walking dead: scary, confusing, exciting and captiveting. Both characters Lan and Azreal were interesting Wow! Both characters Lan and Azreal were interesting and awesome at the same time,i have to admit that both were very frustrating at times so much so that i wanted to shake them but they reedemed themselves in the end.
I love the writing it's descriptive without being too verbose, the author has the amazing quality to make you fall into her world with her words and love every minute of it. So if you haven't already,go read it right now. View all 6 comments. Oct 30, Holly rated it really liked it Shelves: all-time-faves , dark-n-gritty , vampy-witchy-weres-ghosts-zombies , dystopian. New book to add to the all time faves bookshelf!
But it is an R Lee Smith novel so I'm not surprised. But here's the thing The amount of imagination and forethought that goes into her books is phenomenal.
It's like her books make books by othe New book to add to the all time faves bookshelf! It's like her books make books by other authors look bad. Like afterwards I want to drop one star off of all my other reviews simply because I'm reminded what's possible in a book after reading one of hers.
As per the usual- Land of the Beautiful Dead I love that title! Lots of philosophical musings on death, life, love, religion, and racism but blended in so seamlessly to the story it never feels in your face.
Summary: At the core of this book is the question of what it means to be human. Azrael the undead ascended to power on Earth. He's neither living nor dead but some strange alien mix of in between.
He has the power to control the dead and animate them. At his core he's not a bad person but he's so jaded by his past that he's capable of some truly evil things.
Humans of earth viewed him as a threat to their existence. They didn't like his immortality or his powers so they continuously tried to torture, maim, and kill him. He's like a super powered cockroach who can think. And he wears the story of his past torture on his skin. By all appearances he's truly monstrous. As you can imagine that left him with a pretty bad taste in his mouth when it comes to humans so as a result he created a race of undead zombies known as eaters who run around mindlessly killing humans.
He also makes it so that humans turn into eaters when they die. This act plummets the earth into a state of dystopia where the humans who are left live in small walled up towns constantly fighting and fearing for their lives. Enter Lan- a nobody really. She lives on the continent which was once England.
Her only tie to this life is her mother and after going through the terrible experience of her mothers death and inevitable transformation into an eater Lan decides she's going to travel to the city of the dead where Azrael lives and ask him to do away with his hordes of eaters. Sounds easy huh? With a lot of luck and ingenuity Lan succeeds in making her way to the city of Haven. She intrigues Azrael enough to not be killed outright. The next odd pages are filled with their story.
It's at times sad, funny, heartbreaking, romantic, and exciting. There's a bit more angst in this novel which at times I got a bit sick of but it helped nail down the point that Azrael does NOT want to get rid of his eaters.
They're his first line of defense against humans trying to uprise and hurt him. Lan is crude, rude, and hysterically funny. Azrael is epic, alien, and engrossing. But somehow R Lee weaves her magic and the two of them work together. This story is a battle of wills of two very headstrong people.
And its a bit like Beauty and the Beast meets zombies. If you enjoy epic storylines where you can really sink your teeth into a story then give this one a try. It's really different but I think it's a great kinda different. View all 14 comments. Apr 24, Carol rated it it was amazing. I loved this book so much. What I most like about this book was the characters will's, battling through out the story.
It moved the story into the most shocking, and unexpected places. I myself loved every page of this book, I wouldn't change any part of it. But in the interest of helping other readers I will say this, if you don't connected with Lan in the first half of this book it may feel too long.
The author also killed one of my favorite characters, but she did it in such a way, that it WOW! The author also killed one of my favorite characters, but she did it in such a way, that it honored them giving the character more depth, and added more to the story as a whole, this is the only reason I was ok with this part of the book. This book reads like Beauty And The Beast retelling's, because of Azrael looks, power, and the danger Lan finds herself in when provoking Azrael's temper with her boldness, and lack of thought for her own safety.
The Selection is also a book I thought of, because of Azrael many Dollies, and the drama that follow's, when so many women are trying to get the attention of one man for what ever reasons they have for wanting to be with him.
This is also the best book I have read with zombies in it. I really love this book and can't recommend it enough. View all 5 comments. What a book sad to finish. I cannot say enough good things about this book, Land of the beautiful dead is a story I have lived and breathed over the last week,I have laughed and cried and become so emotionally attached to these two flawed characters Lan and Azrael ,I love R L Smith and did not think anything could surpass The Last Hour Of Gann for me but this did.
R L Smith another unique trium What a book sad to finish. R L Smith another unique triumph. Before ever I set eyes on you, I owned you. You were born into my possession. You have waited all your life upon my whim to claim you. Say that you are mine. It is every villain story you ever wanted, but with the villain truly bad. And still getting a hea. And I like that a lot. View 1 comment. I found an epic EPIC! Safety Warning: Abuse, self harm, suicide, OW.
Land of the beautiful dead starts with Lan a young girl from Norwood journeying to Haven where the angel is he an angel?
Azrael resides. Azrael is a mystical, mythical being, he holds domain over death or perhaps he is death himself. The book is set in a post apocalyptic world, like one would accept, the world is set in chaos, food is scarce to most, sex is a commodity, and people no longer hold any worth. So to right the wrong done on the world, our Hero Lan arrives at Haven to demand that the end of the eaters, the zombies.
To save the world, Lan will do anything, even become the concubine of death. Lan was the penultimate hero. She would sacrifice anything, and everything for the world. They were not owed victory. Because just like in the real world, the human kind in this book, is rather hard to love. But home girl was persistent.

I usually adore Smith, but once in a while she writes something which I find either "meh" or don't like at all.
I really, really dislike this trope regardless of the author, but when she does it it takes away too much from where she shines. Here however I also was really bored. I was really waiting for this one. Original and unique. Not safe, though. There's tons of OW, basically many of my triggers are here, but the world is enchanting and the story really different so I didn't hate it.
Sep 08, Amanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: kindle , non-american-lead , tw-cw , my-faves , mmmonsters , horror-smut. Oh my goodness Such a simple narrative and story line, but there's just so much going on in here that it's hard to digest and pick apart to analyze in a single reading.
Many seem to be of the opinion that this is Smith's weakest work. If that's the case, I'm beyond eager to delve into her other novels. I thought this was a perfectly fine place to start as my first Smith novel.
It was nea Oh my goodness It was nearly perfection in my eyes; I can find very little fault with it. It was perhaps a little long-feeling in parts, due to the lack of action in the plot, but those parts were few and far between.
The real meat of the story is in emotional development between two people Lan and Azrael who are products of a world where romance and emotions are as dead as it is. Azrael's Ascension the apocalypse? No one knows for sure: time means nothing to the dead, and the living have better things to do than try to track its passage as they did in the before times. But in that time living humanity has lost almost everything. The Earth is scorched and dying. The average person is illiterate, rife with all manner of disease, dirty, hungry, and starts parceling out their body for barter at a gut-punchingly young age.
It was so difficult to read how matter of fact everyone in this world is about trading their bodies for everything from food to travel. It made me feel physically ill whenever it was referenced. Traveling even 20 miles is nearly impossible; the world is over-run by eaters, a nightmarish version of zombies dreamed up by Azrael as punishment to keep living humanity in their walled settlements and away from him and his beautiful dead in Haven.
No one can simply die anymore; they all become Eaters in the end and must be disposed of in the most horrific way. In contrast, dead humanity has a very different life style. We do not guarantee that these techniques will work for you.
